Job description
Tierra Data Inc. seeks a staff botanist who is familiar with southern and central California regional biological resources, regulatory environment, and reporting requirements. Must be able to gather, analyze and use data effectively in written reports and communicate verbally with regulatory agencies, engineers and others.
Must be able to work both independently and within a collaborative team and meet deadlines within a project budget.
We are a family-owned consulting business in the rural Escondido area.
Expectations of 50% field work and 50% office.
Hybrid work arrangements are possible.
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Interact with various members of public agencies and private clients on all matters related to vegetation and plant resources.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, engagement, quality service, and customer satisfaction to our public and private clients.
- Assist with the preparation of Biological Technical Reports, Aquatic Resources Delineation Reports, Revegetation Plans, and other biological documents.
- Provide background research for municipal and private land development projects.
- Participate in meetings with TDI staff, municipal and private clients.
- Assist with the preparation of all levels of biological documents.
- Enhance TDI’s professional reputation and demonstrate the ability to be creative and innovative with these tasks while representing TDI in a professional manner.
- Work closely with the Principal Scientists and Senior Biologists to promote our business interests in adherence with the company’s mission, vision, and values.
- Coordinate natural resources and habitat restoration projects.
- Conduct botanical resource surveys.
- Map vegetation to quantitative standards.
- Develop weed management plans, strategies and control measures. Oversee and implement control measures.
- Conduct environmental impact analyses.
- Prepare biological documents in accordance with CEQA and NEPA guidelines.
- Prepare biological reports adhering to local, state, and federal requirements.
- Develop and maintain client relationships.
Experience and Skills - Candidates should hold at least a BA/BS degree in botany, ecology, environmental science, planning or a related discipline. An MA /MS is preferred. The successful candidate will possess at least 5 years of post-baccalaureate experience in plant related surveys, report writing, and applying government regulations. Experience and/or more than a passing familiarity with preparing CEQA and/or NEPA biological compliance documents is strongly desired.
- Working knowledge of federal and state laws (i.e., NEPA, CEQA, CWA, ESA and CESA) and requirements governing natural resource management.
- Strong organizational, communication, writing, and analytical skills.
- Ability to foster a friendly, positive, productive, and scholarly working relationship with team members while promoting a culture of teamwork, engagement, quality service, and customer satisfaction.
- A demonstrated competency with botanical and vegetation survey methodologies.
- Demonstrated experience in increasing levels of responsibility, including supervising, providing leadership, and mentoring for other professionals.
- Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).
- Collector, Field Maps and Other GIS tools.
